Spent part of yesterday...

working on the yellow and blue quilt. I now have the center section all pieced together. I have to do the borders next. I was thinking yesterday that since the yellow border is solid yellow, and this is a Winnie the Pooh print. I might just have to embroider some Winnie the Pooh sayings, or the characters names or something in the border. I think I might get a little book or a little stuffed Pooh or something to send with it. I love doing things like that, coordinating all the items in a gift around a central theme. Just wierd old me I guess!

I also spent a good portion of yesterday helping my husband sort his Legos! He finally busted in to the Lego Millenium Falcon that he got for his birthday in 2005. There are over a thousand pieces and 75 pages of instructions for this crazy thing! It will be cool when he gets it done, though. J is a huge Star Wars nut. We have a room in our basement that we eventually want to finish into a room where he can have his computers and play his games and we want to do it all in a Star Wars theme. He calls it his "Man Cave". LOL

6 Wierd Things....

1.) My first official date with my husband was after we were already engaged. (Long story) We went to Mexican Village (local restaurant) and to the movie "Liar, Liar".

2.) I don't think this is wierd, but my husband says it is. I like to eat white rice with butter and sugar on it. I used to work with a girl from Hungary and she said that this is a common dish there. Considering that my great-great-grandfather was from Prague and this was passed down to me through my mother (ie she is the one who got me started eating it for breakfast when I was little), I don't think it is that wierd.

3.) I HATE the cold, but I live in Minnesota. I have told my husband several times, "I live in the wrong state." My family's roots are southern, and I am definately a southern girl at heart, even though I live in the frozen north. Give me humidity and fireflies any day over cold and snowflakes!

4.) I eat peanut butter and maple syrup (no real butter, thank you) on my waffles. Try it you'll like it!

5.) I already posted this over at Roxanne's in a comment, but I'll put it here, too. Whenever I have several identical items to choose from, like beads to string or whatever. Whichever one my hand lands on, or my eye lands on first I have the compulsion to think that that one HAS to be next, even if there are a hundred more all just like that one. Even if I pick it up and it drops back into whatever container they are in, I HAVE to fish out the first one I picked up. Like that is its destiny or something. Same thing if I am taking pills. I turn the bottle up and if more than one falls out, I feel like I have to take the first one that came out, even if they are exactly the same thing. Sometimes I make myself take the second one or whatever, just to prove to myself that it really is ok. LOL Definately wierd!

6.) Lastly, maybe not terribly wierd, but unusual, none the less. Like, Amanda, my husband is the first person that I ever really considered a serious boyfriend. We met in Willmar, MN in August of '96, began dating (oficially) on Thanksgiving Day of that same year in Bogota, Colombia, were engaged in Florida on Valentine's Day of '97 and married exactly one year later on Valentine's Day of '98 in Illinois.

So there ya have it, 6 oddities about me. LOL

Hmmm.... I've been tagged....

My good friend Amanda has tagged me for the wierdness game that is going around. I will have to think about that one for a while, but I promise that I will post them soon. I, however, do not know six people who have not already been tagged, so I really have no one else to pass it along to.

I just wanted to jump in here and post about the block swap. I have 5 people signed up so far including myself. If I can't get six, I suppose that we could do it with just 5 and each do 15 blocks. It might then be good to do 3 different combinations of 5 each and then each person would get three of the others blocks. It would be the same block pattern and the same palette, just 3 combinations within those parameters, if that makes sense. I will wait until Monday and see if I have anyone else interested and then I'll probably email those interested with more information.

I have been working on the yellow and blue baby quilt and I have started working on the strips for the top. I am almost halfway finished with them, then I'll have to sew them together and put the borders on. This is the pattern that I am using for it, just to refresh your memory.

I hope you all have a great Saturday!

You know, I been thinkin'

I've been thinking about this block swap thing all day. ( I have plenty of time to ponder these things as it is sloooowwww at work these days.) If I could round up even 6 people to do it, then we could each only make 12 blocks, then we could each have 2 of the others blocks instead of one from each. That would still be enough diversity to make the quilts interesting. I might put some feelers out over at Angelic Reborns, I know there are a couple of quilters over there. I also know a lady at work that might be interested. Maybe it would work. Who knows? Let me know if you might be interested. It wouldn't have to be a complicated time consuming block or anything like that. Not sure I could handle that, LOL, novice quilter that I am.

Saw something that I thought would be fun...

I was watching "Simply Quilts" yesterday and they had a really neat story on. It sounded like a lot of fun. There was a group of 18 quilters on there they called the "rad swappers". What they do is they have a deadline to meet to make 18 identical blocks with a preset block size, block pattern and color palette. Other than that they are free to do as they wish with the blocks. Then when they have the blocks done each person gets one of the other's blocks, so that they have 18 different blocks. Then they have to assemble a quilt top out of all of the blocks. It was really neat to see how many different quilts could be made all from the same 18 blocks. I wish there were pictures to show you, but hgtv.com didn't have any on their site. I wish I knew enough people who like to quilt to try something like that! You'd have to have enough people, and the right number so that you could actually have enough blocks to make up a top. I'm afraid the 3 or 4 people that I know who like to quilt just wouldn't be enough! LOL There'd be like 5 blocks! LOL Sounded like fun, though!

Speaking of quilting, on to the yellow and blue quilt. I got 13 of the 35 nine patch blocks done. Strip piecing is pretty cool. The blocks turn out so much nicer than if I had just tried to patch the 9 patches together. Hopefully I can get the rest done by Saturday so that I can start putting the top together then. Can't wait! That will be fun!

Not much.....

happening in craftland at the Lehn's house! I have been trying to get pieces cut for the yellow and blue quilt. I got most of them cut, but now I am strip piecing and have to cut those. I have 2 more of those to piece and cut, then I can start assembling the top. I started back to work today so my crafting time is greatly diminished. I need to go and clean up my kitchen from dinner and then maybe I'll get an hour or two in. Maybe I can at least get the last of the strips sewn together and cut into pieces. I am excited to start putting it together. I love that part, seeing the quilt starting to take shape. Just thought I'd check in so ya'll wouldn't think I'd abandoned you or something! :)

As promised....

The picture bonanza....
First is a quilt that I made back in June for my niece, Allison. She is 15 and had scoliosis surgery. I call it my "Hugs and Kisses" quilt. It has x's and o's in the design.

Next is the q hook afghan that I finally finished after two years.

Here is the baby blanket that I made yesterday

These are Jason's brother John's two girls Claire (5) and Mady (2). They live in Austin, TX and are apparently enjoying the unseasonably cold temps they have been having.

I made them these blankees for Christmas earlier this fall. I did one side with furry fleece and the other with cotton fabric.

Mady's is light blue on the back and red flowers on the front.

Claire's is turquoise on the back with lavender and turquoise flowers on the front.

Here is the other kit I bought to make for myself.

And last but not least the yellow and blue quilt fabric.

Wooo Hooo!!!

I finally got to go to the fabric store! I haven't had the chance to spend much money on fabric since before Thanksgiving! I went a little overboard, but not too bad. I spent about 60 bucks, but I got stuff to make 3 quilts/blankets. I bought the fabric for the yellow and blue quilt. I didn't buy the batting yet, I'll get that later, I think Hancock's is supposed to have it on sale soon. I also got two of the "Cuddle Quilt" kits they sell at Joanne's. They don't have them on their website or I'd post a link. One of them I actually finished this afternoon. It was a nice short afternoon project. I started about 1:30 or so and finished it about 6. Tomorrow I will try and take some pictures of my recent projects and post them. It is sort of a major production for me to post pictures as they are stored on a different computer from the one I usually post from.

For the yellow and blue quilt I got the Winnie the Pooh fabric. It is only Eeyore who is blue, but it will work. Then I got just a simple small blue and white stripe, a small blue print that is not really any design, just some squiggles, then some solids to round it out.

The cuddle quilt that I finished today was for some of Jason's online friends. There is a married couple who both play the game that he plays and they are expecting a baby boy in April. It had a panel in the front that was light blue with crescent moons with teddy bears sleeping on them and on clouds and stuff. The moons are wearing red and white striped nightcaps. The center panel was then bordered with red and white striped flannel, then a dark blue mottled fabric with little sparkles in it, and then a third border was yellow minkee with moons and stars cut into the pile. The back was more of the red and white striped flannel. There is no batting, so, it isn't really a quilt, but more of a 2 layer blanket with a pieced top. It is just a small blanket, but it will be good for carseats and strollers and that sort of thing. It is only about 30x36 inches or so. I think it turned out pretty cute and was really easy to do. A nice little afternoon project, one of those sort of instant gratification projects. After the coupon and stuff it was only $12.00, that and a little bit of my time and that is a pretty nice little baby gift, I think, anyway.

The other kit that I bought, I bought for me. ;) This one I am putting away when I finish it, too. It is a little girl quilt. It will be the same size as the other one that I did today. It has a pink flannel, a floral flannel with a white background and pink flowers with green leaves, a white eyelet, a mint green minkee, a mint green flannel with pink flowers, a pink satin and a pink striped chenille. The center is squares of all of the fabrics except the chenille which is used for the border. I think the back is the solid pink flannel, but I'm not sure because I haven't opened the kit yet. There are 12 squares in the middle and just one border of the pink chenille. I think this one will go together really quick, too. I hope to eventually do our little girl's room in pink and green, so this will be perfect! I couldn't put it back on the shelf after I saw it! LOL I know, I am thinking WAYY ahead, but we are serious about wanting to adopt. It is going to be quite a while before we can start the process. Picking up little things here and there makes it seem more real to me and makes me feel better about having to wait so long, so this is good for me. I occasionally shop the clearance racks for things that she can eventually wear, too. Things in bigger sizes that will fit in more than one season, LOL.

Amanda, tell Kevin that J's top speed overall is still pretty slow, but he has left the walker behind pretty well at this point. If he was in a race, the tortoise would probably win. :) He is doing a little better every day, though. He moved back downstairs to play on his computer, so the stairs are getting better for him. He said that tomorrow he wants to try the treadmill for a few minutes. Getting out and just walking, and doing the exercises they gave him are the best things that he can do right now to build his strength back up. The butterfly strips (they took the stitches out before he came home) came off of his incision today and he was soooo glad to be able to just scrub around that spot when he took his shower today. It was just sooo itchy. It is mostly healed up now, just a few little spots yet need to heal. I think his stomach shrank while he was in the hospital. He doesn't eat as much as he used to. (which is probably a good thing) Tonight he only ate half of his hamburger and about a dozen tater tots. He couldn't eat any more. Usually he'd eat two burgers and three times the tater tots! He did lose a lot of weight. Not sure how much because our scale is broken, but you can really see it when you look at him. Pete, J's boss, stopped in today for a few minutes and he commented about how much thinner he looked, too. He says he can tell a difference in his clothes, too.

We're cruisin' now!

We actually went out to dinner last night! We went to the "Old Country Bucket" as we like to call it. J wanted a good salad bar and it was either there or Bonanza, soooo. Then we went to Best Buy for a few minutes. J pushed a cart instead of using a walker, lol. I joked with him that we can now go shopping anywhere they have carts. Stairs are much better, too. He wants to move back downstairs to his regular gaming computer. It's a little faster and the monitor is better, so he really wants to get back downstairs to play the new expansion of the game that he likes to play. You know he's doing pretty good then! He is a little depressed, though, he feels like he isn't good for anything but taking up space because he can't do much. He is afraid his boss will decide he doesn't need him anymore. (Which will NOT happen, believe me!!) So if you are praying people, pray for that, too. He could use a little boost. I wish I could think of a helpful project that I could give him to do, but I'm not sure.... hmmm... will have to give that some thought. He can't lift more than 10 pounds and can't bend or twist a lot, so that really limits him.

Since I am getting my craft room back, at least I think I am, I am hoping to hit the fabric store later this week to make that little blue and yellow quilt for my step-niece's baby due in May. I still have about 4 dollars left on the gift card that my good friend (wink) gave me for my birthday for Joanne's and a coupon to boot, so hopefully I can find what I want there. They had some that I liked a couple of weeks before Christmas, but who knows if they will still have it. I am hoping so because they seemed like sort of "staple" items. The yellow and blue print that I need I found a Winnie the Pooh print that was a yellow background and some of the animals have blue (Eeyore, Rabbit, and maybe Piglet). The only other option was a floral print and since this quilt is for a baby boy, then I thought the Pooh print might be better.

We ordered a new mattress and box springs (after nearly 9 years sleeping on a cheap mattress and box springs which were all we could afford when we first got married). That is supposed to be delivered today which will be awesome! J is still sleeping by himself in the bed, it is just easier for him to turn over and stuff. At least I'll get the old mattress and box springs to sleep on in the basement. I've been sleeping on the couch since we got home. I'm ready to sleep on a bed again.

Call me lazy but I ordered my groceries on line yesterday and those are supposed to come between noon and 2 and the bed between 2 and 4, so whatever running I do today, I need to be home by noon. I have a gift certificate for Bed Bath and Beyond and a 15% off coupon, too. I think I'll see about some new sheets for the new bed. J was using one of the sheets from one of our sets when he was sleeping down in his chair before surgery, He accidentally got the edge under one of the wheels of his chair and ripped a huge hole in the sheet. OOOPs! That left us with only one decent set. Oh well, good excuse to get some new ones. :)

Home again!

We are HOME! Home is a great place to be! :) We actually got home Friday afternoon at about 3:30 or so. J is doing fairly well. He is sitting up for longer periods of time now. He is still really weak in his back muscles, which is understandable considering what they did to him! He has some weakness in his hips so getting up and down and taking stairs is a little challenging. He uses a walker to get around. He can manage getting around the house ok by himself as long as he doesn't try the stairs by himself. We did manage to make it out for his Mom's 60th birthday party for a little while yesterday. It is a little nerve wracking for me because I am afraid that he is going to fall and he could really damage his back muscles if he fell. For those of you who don't know, my husband is also not a small person. He is about 6 feet tall and around 300 pounds. He lost quite a bit of weight over his hospital stay. You can really see it in his face. Though having lost weight is probably good for him, I wouldn't recommend this method to anyone!

If you are curious as to what they did to him here is a link to a description of they type of surgery he had. This description shows only one vertebrae done, but they did 3 on J. They did the 12th thoracic through the second lumbar vertebrae on J. He has about an 8 inch incision scar and had about 30-35 stitches or so.

I got quite a bit of work done on my odd little triangular pink crochet blanket while he was in the hospital. Hopefully I can get back into crafting a bit now that he is on the mend. I had to temorarily give up my desk in my craft room where my sewing machine is so that J could sit at his laptop computer and play games for a while since stairs are a bit much right now. LOL Anyone who knows J knows that that is a sure sign that he is on the mend! :)

Surgery is over!!!!

Now begins the healing process. J's surgery went well. It took about 5 hours from start to finish. The tumor was definately benign. The doctor said it was about the size of your thumb from the knuckle to the tip. It was also right on the the nerve, I mean like growing on the nerve, so it is no wonder he was in so much pain! All of the nerve pain is gone, but the surgery pain is still pretty painful. He is ok until they try to move him and then it hurts. They had to go through a lot of muscle in his back to get to it. He has been sleeping a lot, the pain meds make him sleepy and that is fine because he needs to heal anyway.

I just thought I'd jump in here and let you all know as I can't access my email address book from here and I thought you'd want to know.

Ho Ho's Gone :(

That's what my niece, Kayla said after Christmas was over the year she was 18 months at Christmas time. (Ho Ho being her name for Santa). I managed to put the decorations away today. It always makes me a little sad to see them all packed up and the house back to my boring old stuff. I still feel like I have a thousand things to do before I can leave my house for a week unattended. Clean out the fridge a bit, clean the cat's boxes, clear up the clutter that has accumulated EVERYWHERE! But I had to sit down and take a short break after hauling the Christmas tree down to the basement and all the decorations and stowing them in the storage space.

I went to crafts direct yesterday and picked up yarn for a project that I hope won't take a really long time. My mom made this and photocopied the pattern for me. She said it was pretty easy and went together pretty quick. I am getting away from my "33 or so projects", but did I really think I would keep on track for that long without finding a diversion? I bought a pale lavender yarn. I think I will put this one away for safe keeping when it is done. :) It seems I rarely ever keep what I make.

I did finish the crochet afghan that I started two years ago. I ran out of yarn and decided it was big enough and didn't want to put more money into it. Be forewarned, if you make a q hook afghan with really bulky yarn, be prepared to buy a lot of yarn! This afghan is only a little larger than lap size, but it took about 8 skeins of yarn! It is really nice and soft, though. When I get time, probably after J's surgery, I will have a picture bonanza again!
